3. Running the OpenMap Viewer

Once the OpenMap Viewer application starts you will see a map of the Earth with a 10° graticule.

3.1 Menu Options

• File Menu - This menu has main application controls, and input/output controls.

  

  • About About the underlying OpenMap software.
  • Save Map... Save the current projection and layers in an openmap.properties file.
  • Load Map... Choose and load an openmap.properties file containing settings for a new projection and layers.
  • Save As Save the map as...
    • JPEG A JPEG image.
  • Quit Quit the map application.

• Control Menu - This menu has application controls.

  

  • Mouse Mode... Change the mouse behavior.
    • Navigate allows you to move around on the map.
    • Gestures passes mouse events through to layers.
    • Distance measure distances on the map.
    • None no actions performed.
  • Set Background Color Change the background color of the map.
  • Display Tool Panel Toggles the Tool Panel above the map.

• Navigate Menu - This menu has map projection controls.

  

  • Coordinates... Reposition map dialog.
  • Projection Set the map display projection.
  • Zoom In Zoom the map in by the specified amount.
  • Zoom Out Zoom the map out by the specified amount.

• Layers - This menu controls which layers are on the map.

  

  • <Layer1> Select topmost layer on map.
  • <Layer2> Select next layer.
  • <...>
  • <LayerN> Select bottommost layer on map.
  • Edit Layers... Bring up the layer editor window.
  • Add Layers... Add and configure a new layer.

• Views - This menu controls saved map locations.

  

  • Add Saved View... Save the current map projection as a view.
  • <World> Default world view.
  • <...> Different defined views.

• Help

  

  Bring up help in your Web Browser. This option needs to be configured in your openmap.properties file.

3.2 Toolbar Options

• Rosette The rosette pans the map in the specified direction and the middle button recenters the view to the starting point.
• Magnifying Glass + Zooms in 2X over the center of the map.
• Magnifying Glass - Zooms out 2X over the center of the map.
• Scale Entry Enter the scale of the map.
• Layer Panel Button Brings up the layers panel to change the order of layers, control layer palettes, and to add/remove layers.
• Drawing Tool Launcher Draw on the map, and choose which layer will receive the graphic.
• Overview Map Bring up a smaller map for reference and navigation.
• Mouse Mode Change the mouse behavior.
  • Navigate allows you to move around on the map.
  • Gestures passes mouse events through to layers.
  • Distance measure distances on the map.
  • None no actions performed.
• Projection Stack Buttons Return to the previous projection, or move forward to the next one (if defined).

3.3 Layers Panel Window

In addition to adding and removing layers from the map, the Layer Editor allows you to change their vertical position in relation to each other, and bring up their specific palette controls.

• Turn layer off/on.
• Turn layer palette (GUI) controls on. Button reflects if the palette is active, and the palette has a control button to hide itself.
• Move the selected layer to top of map.
• Move the selected layer up one level in map.
• Move the selected layer down one level in map.
• Move the selected layer to bottom of map.
• Delete the selected layer from the application.
• Bring up a tool to add and configure a layer.

  

• An example of a layer palette. This palette is for the Graticule layer, and it lets you modify the layer's behavior.

3.4 Coordinates Window

Specify coordinates in decimal degrees or DMS. Click apply and the map will be recentered over the position indicated.
