Reviewer: Lisa Charlong

Editor's note: all changes recommended by reviewer were applied
(circa 2001-09-21, I think) by Lou, except those flagged with "!!"
below. -- Syd, 2001-11-01

---- Section 1.

Para 2 starting "They provide means of representing..."

- Include "encoding" with "markup and "tagging"

Para 6 starting "These Guidelines also make reference to ISO 646 and Unicode..."

- Move concluding sentence "For more information on markup languages..." to
end of preceding paragraph.

- Insert space after ISO in ISO646 to be consistent with rest of Guidelines.

---- Section 1.1

Para 1 starting "Part I provides some relevant background information about..."

- Change "a brief technical review of markup systems" to a brief technical review
of markup languages"

Para 8 starting with "Part VIII provides further reference material..."

- Take "no formal subset has been defined..." out of parenthesis and insert as a
full sentence.

---- Section 1.1.2

Para 8 starting with "All the examples are (or should be) legal SGML or XML..."

- "They also frequently make liberal use of white space to exhibit the logical
structure more clearly" Add logical structure of the text or encoding?

Para 9 starting with "Attribute values are given indifferently in single quotes or double
quotes"

- Start new sentence at "Unquoted attribute values are not permitted in
XML..."

- Close parenthesis at end of paragraph.

---- Section 1.2

Para 4 starting with "The goals of creating a common interchange format which..."

- Change "they are constructed so that they can be trivially converted to either
language" to "they are constructed so that they can be easily converted to
either language"

Para 9 starting with "In these Guidelines, no hard and fast distinction is drawn between"

- Insert comma after narrow in "often useful in narrow well defined contexts..."
!! inserted by Syd 2001-11-01 after consulting w/ 2 collegues (both
PhD candidates in English): one claims it should be there; the
other that the difference in meaning with and without is subtle,
but moreover that since all narrow contexts are definitionally
well defined, so it really should be "often useful in narrow
   contexts...".

Para 11 starting with "In many situations more than one view of a text is needed. No
absolute..."

- Delete the word "they" in ", but they sometimes provide several
alternative..."

---- Section 1.2.2.1.

Para 4 starting with "XML, and even SGML, can appear distressingly verbose..."

- Change "XML, and even SGML, can appear distressingly verbose" to "XML
and SGML, can appear distressingly verbose..."
!! Not changed -- sentence reads better and has more meaning as is

Para 6 starting with "The SGML standard provides ways of abbreviating..,"

- Change Guides in last sentence to Guidelines? "that these Guidelines have."
!! Last phrase of sentence completely reworded: "proposed by these
   Guidelines."; much better.

---- Section 1.3.1

Para 6 starting with "Following the ratification of XML and its rapid adoption, many
projects found need for an update to these Guidelines, to support ..."

- Change "For one example," to "For example"

- Change "decisions on relevant syntactic issue" to "decisions on relevant
syntactic issues".
!! Syd fixed, 2001-11-01

- Remove comma after "undertaken" in "a formal update was undertaken, to
provide an update..."
!! rewritten

- Remove "that is" from "to provide an update of the DTDs that is compatible
with both SGML and XML..."
!! rewritten
