General release packages: pre-beta
Dr. Michael L. Love, 2001.06.20
Warning:
These instructions are still a work in
progress
and may contain inaccuracies or omissions.
Be
sure to read the APSL and the GPL,
so that you will know your
rights.
Send any email regarding this document
to proclus@iname.com (Dr. Michael Love).
Please remember
that we are in alpha,
so this procedure is for the
adventurous.
Almost all the packages work,
but there are still many problems.
Join the project, if you want them fixed!
I think
that we can go beta with what is in this directory,
If there are other items that should be in the GNU-Darwin base,
you should also let me know. This directory currently holds 47MB, so there is
plenty more room. If you would like to help with the source code, feel free to
check
it out.
Regards,
proclus

Before you use the new package manager, you will have to replace your tar
binary. You can use the following commands to backup your default tar
and replace it with the new one.
wget http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/packages/tar
su root (that would be sudo -s for a stock OSX installation)
cp /usr/bin/tar ~
cp tar /usr/bin
-
Install the package manager applications according to these instructions. Then look below and download the
desired package to a directory called "packages".
Here is an example of how to use pkg_add.
su root (that would be sudo -s for a stock OSX installation)
cd packages
pkg_add -vf ./windowmaker-i18n-0.62.1_1.tgz
-
Use pkg_add to install additional packages that you might want, such as the
esound-0.2.22.tgz, and the esd-enabled
everybuddy-0.2.0_1.tgz,
gqmpeg-0.8.1.tgz, and
mpg123-esound-0.59r.tgz
packages. GNU-Darwin has audio support now, net-audio that is,
if you have a second computer with esd running and good sound support.
-
Finally, if you got to this step, and you are still frustrated, and you
simply must have these packages, then follow this procedure for each one. This
will also install nasty +files, which you can delete with an "rm ./+*"
su root
cd /usr/local
tar -zxf ThePackage.tgz
-
If you still have questions, try posting a message to the one of the discussion
forums.

Finally,
check out The Darwin Collection CD
set, which offers nearly 2000 software packages which are compatible with this
system, plus much more.
